There are some companies on whom you have got to have trust. Like you can’t have any option, you have to. Facebook seemed like such a company but Alas!
They sold our data to Netflix. Or at least, the claims say that. Recently, some papers were revealed in court, and they say some big stuff about Meta, which owns Facebook. They say Meta let Netflix see people’s private messages on Facebook for almost ten years. That’s freaking scary, to say the least. It is very very horrifying.
This is part of a big lawsuit from Maximilian Klein and Sarah Grabert, who say Netflix and Facebook were really close.
The lawsuit says Netflix spent lots of money on ads on Facebook and shared data with them. The numbers claimed are as high as $100 Million. In return, Facebook gave Netflix special access to stuff like private APIs. This helped Netflix make ads that fit better with what people liked.
One shocking thing in the lawsuit is that Meta gave Netflix a special API called “Titan.” This lets Netflix send messages to people on Facebook, like telling them what to watch on Netflix.
But Meta says this isn’t true. They say they didn’t give Netflix people’s messages without them knowing. They say Netflix could only send messages to people’s inboxes using the API, which is normal.
This isn’t the first time Meta got in trouble for privacy stuff. In 2018, it came out that Facebook let companies like Spotify and Netflix see people’s messages. This made people worry about their privacy and how much Facebook shared with others.
Meta also got fined before for privacy issues. In 2022, they got fined $284 million for letting data of over 500 million users get leaked online. And they had to pay $725 million to settle a case about Cambridge Analytica, which got info from millions of Facebook users without their consent.
We do realize that Netflix is the largest streaming platform in the world. But, did it achieve this feat through these petty tricks? We need to take this seriously.
