The final trailer for Netflix’s 3 Body Problem, a sci-fi epic adapted from Liu Cixin’s Hugo award-winning work by the Game of Thrones showrunners, was published ahead of its March 21 premiere date.
The adventurous video begins with a police car pulling up to a suburban home. It then cuts to an injured woman telling a partner something that is both “crazy” and “true,” implying that it is something that affects everyone on the planet.
A voiceover then takes us to a solitary radar control room in the past, where it is explained that radio astronomers, who will only be referred to as “they,” discovered a message in 1977 that would eventually be known as “the WOW signal.” The youthful radio operator is seen pushing a large red button just before the narrative returns to the present. This could be a crucial scene that changes the course of human history as a whole.
After that, there are intermittent flickers in the night sky till it is completely obscured by an unidentified object covering the horizon. Liam Cunningham’s character may be heard wondering what the WOW signal was attempting to say over this enigmatic background, to which Rosalind Chao’s character Ye Wenjie responds, “They are coming.”
One of the main storylines in 3 Body Problem’s first season is the investigation of who “they” are. The rest of the video featured a fast-paced montage of various images that showed humanity devolving into anarchy and maybe going to war with an unidentified foe, while also providing more looks at the odd virtual reality apparatus and hovering countdown seen in earlier portions.
Jin Cheng, played by Jess Hong, is heard saying, “As someone who fought back,” in response to Ye Wenjie’s question in a pivotal scene near the close of the two-minute teaser.
The next big project from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss is Netflix’s adaptation of Liu Cixin’s 3 Body Problem, which chronicles “the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization” and examines the sociological effects that such a momentous occasion might have on our budding race.
