Despite the conclusion of “The Crown” last year, Netflix is planning another royal drama.
The first teaser for “Scoop,” the streamer’s feature-length dramatization of Prince Andrew’s suspenseful interview with “Newsnight” presenter Emily Maitlis, has been posted.
Rufus Sewell, star of “The Diplomat,” plays Andrew in the movie, while Gillian Anderson plays Maitlis. Alongside Keeley Hawes, who plays Andrew’s former private assistant Amanda Thirsk, Billie Piper plays Sam McAlister, the producer of “Newsnight” who got Andrew to agree to an interview and whose book (“Scoops”) served as the basis for the movie.
The British prince, who resolved a sexual assault lawsuit with Virginia Guiffre two years prior, stated he had no remorse regarding his association with convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein, which led to Andrew’s interview with Maitlis in November 2019 being branded a “car crash.” In addition, he showed no remorse for Epstein’s victims and offered absurd explanations for why he was unable to have intercourse with Guiffre. Among them were the assertions that he had lost the capacity to perspire and that on the night they first met through Epstein, he was dining at the Pizza Express location in Woking.
After the interview’s backlash, Andrew resigned from his public position, and his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, finally took away his military rank and title. After McAlister’s 2022 story of landing the interview was published, it was quickly optioned for a film, which Voltage and The Lighthouse would produce. In addition, Maitlis is creating a Michael Sheen and Ruth Wilson-starring Amazon version of the interview with Blueprint Pictures. On April 5, “Scoop” will launch on Netflix.
