OTT giant Netflix has decided not to go ahead with another season of its live-action series ‘Cowboy Bebop’, whose first season started streaming on the platform from 19th November. This is rather surprising because the show has been discontinued even before the 28-day audience viewership metrics could be ascertained.
Albeit the decision is certainly not entirely surprising because Cowboy Bebop’s ambitious and expensive, yet well-intentioned first season was not quite met with a very encouraging response from audiences and critics alike.
For some perspective, the show is currently rated with a not-so-impressive 6.8 average user rating on IMDb. On reviews aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Cowboy Bebop’ is currently rated at 46% Tomatometer score with merely 55% average audience score. Moreover, the show received a Metascore of just 47 on Metacritic.
Having said that and despite the somewhat unfavorable stats, ‘Cowboy Bebop’ was praised for the performances of its cast members and the electrifying chemistry between the lead actors John Cho, Mustafa Shakir, and Daniella Pineda. While some others found the show a fun-filled venture. So, the show not getting renewed for a second season might have a bittersweet effect for a segment of audiences.
The sci-fi show ‘Cowboy Bebop’ was a live-action adaptation of the immensely popular 1998 Japanese animated series of the same name. The ten-episode series, set in the year 2171, follows the daredevil space adventures of a fearless Mars-born bounty hunter Spike (played by John Cho) with a violent past. In the show, Spike chases dangerous Solar System criminals along with his ragtag crew of bounty hunters which includes his partner and Bebop Captain – Jet, and Faye, a bounty hunter with no past memory.
