Disney has been the ultimate go to place for animation for a long time. But better films are being made on other platforms and they are better received too.
Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio has done better in this movie which actually happens to be the usp of Disney animated movies.
The live-action 2022 remake of the 1940 Disney film was not very well received. It does not have a great rating either. Great actors like Luke Evans, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Keegan Michael Key were in the movie in important roles and the living legend Tom Hanks himself played the role of Gepetto. It could not make a mark even though there was so much anticipation.
Del Toro’s Pinocchio has been rated a record 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. It is received by audiences with much love. Pinocchio is accepted widely as a stop-motion marvel as well as a very dark and exciting story. When the story is known to all, it is difficult for the makers to do something different with it, but that is what Del Toro has done. Guillermo badly wants to revive the lost art of stop motion animation with Pinocchio. Stop motion takes a lot more effort and time than usual animation and that makes it special too. Pinocchio comes to the rescue of a greatly celebrated form of animation.
Also Netflix has previously made a wonderful animated show ‘Love, Death+Robots’. This show was accepted widely. Oscar winning director Alberto Mielgo directed the most famous episode of ‘Jibaro’ in the last season. The show got a handful of Emmy awards. Netflix is replacing Disney as the go-to place for animation day by day.
It will be difficult for Disney to overcome the loss and to overtake Netflix by making good content, while ambitious and anticipated projects like the Pinocchio remake did not do good at all.
