Streaming giant Netflix has reportedly entered into a strategic multi-year partnership with Indian production house Excel Entertainment headed by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar. As per the said deal, the reputed production banner will produce an unknown number of projects for the Netflix OTT platform.
Earlier today, the official Twitter handle of Netflix India had confirmed the above development as they announced their partnership with Excel Entertainment. It was also informed that the partnership will begin with two exclusive series namely ‘Dabba Cartel’ and ‘Queen of the Hill’. The post was concurrently retweeted by Excel Entertainment. The post amusingly ended with the words “Yah toh yeh partnership gehri hai, ya toh yeh tweet 3D hai” which is incidentally a popular line from their own cult film ‘Dil Chahta Hai’.
‘Dabba Cartel’ is said to be a period drama set amidst the backdrop of jazz-rich 1960s Mumbai and would ostensibly revolve around the story of five homemakers who run a high-stakes secret cartel. While the other show ‘Queen of the Hill’ would reportedly be based on two ambitious women and how their relationship will change the city forever.
Previously, Excel Entertainment has consistently churned out some exciting cinematic content that includes ‘Dil Chahta Hai’, ‘Lakshya’, ‘Don’, ‘Rock On’, ‘Luck by Chance’, ‘Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara’, ‘Talaash’, ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’, ‘Raees’, ‘Gold’, and ‘Gully Boy’, amongst other projects.
On the Indian OTT front, Excel has been associated with some well-known projects like the acclaimed sports drama ‘Inside Edge’, the cult show ‘Mirzapur’, and wedding based drama ‘Made in Heaven’, which are streaming on the Amazon Prime Video OTT platform. Besides, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s boxing film ‘Toofaan’ was also released on Amazon Prime Video. So, it will be interesting to witness the creative synergy between Netflix and Excel Entertainment as both are prominent players of the Indian entertainment industry.
