Latest South African film from Netflix has officially found it’s release date. The streaming giant has announced that the movie will premiere on April 27th, coinciding with South Africa’s Freedom Day.
Directed by South African filmmaker Mandla Dube, who previously directed the popular “Kalushi: The Story of Solomon Mahlangu”, the action-thriller film is set in 1980 and inspired by the real life event that set ablaze the “Free Mandela” movement.
The titular Silverton Siege trio is played by Thabo Rametsi, Noxolo Dlamini and Stefan Erasmus respectively. They play three young and brave freedom fighters who have nothing left to lose. They take refuge in a South African bank in Silverton after a high-speed car chase with the police and a failed mission. The trio then goes on to hold the bank hostage, thereby demanding the release of Nelson Mandela. The film also stars one of the most popular South-African stars of today Arnold Voslo.
” ’Silverton Siege’ is my strongest work thus far, the hope is that filmmakers from Africa are given more opportunities at de-colonizing the narrative of who we are. I also hope that the youth of today can draw inspiration from the Silverton Siege trio, and know that they have the power to change the status quo, and most importantly that their stories matter.”
says Dube who also directed the Netflix series ‘Jiva!’ in 2021.
Bank-rolled by Pambili Media and executive produced by Walter Ayres and Mandla Dube, the film will have a world wide release on April 27th, 2022. We are looking forward for a trailer and further promotional materials from the film. We are also hoping that Netflix concentrates more on South African cinema henceforth and choosing stories like Silverton Siege is a right step in the right direction.
