After spending years in development hell, finally Neil Gaiman and DC Comics’ extremely renowned comic book The Sandman is gearing up for a live action series, thanks to Netflix. They are already on course in shaping up the casting of the series and it surely looks interesting.
Recently we have learnt that ‘The Serpent’ actress Jenna Coleman also joined hands with the story of Dream, the titular Sandman. Jenna Coleman will be portraying the role of Johanna Constantine, eighteenth-century occult detective and the great-grandmother of John Constantine. This will be extremely interesting to how makers approach the Constantine character as female as for a long time, we became habituated in seeing a male actor portraying the character, be it in movies or be it in series.
Those who are unfamiliar with The Sandman comic book, the story revolves around Dream aka Morpheus who was captured by an occult ritual and held prisoner for 70 years. He finally escapes from them in the modern day and, after avenging himself upon his captors, Dream sets about rebuilding his kingdom, which has fallen into disrepair in his absence.
Now Along with Jenna Coleman‘s Johanna Constantine, let us see who else will be featuring in The Sandman series.
First off is ‘The Boat That Rocked‘ actor Tom Sturridge as the titular Sandman, Dream aka Morpheus who is also called the king of dreams. Dream is one of the seven Endless, a group of extremely powerful beings older and greater than gods.
Then we have Game of Thrones actress Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, the ruler of hell, the fallen angel and devil of Christianity and is one of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe. Lucifer will be portrayed by a female for the first time.
Apart from them, the characters of Death, Desire and Despair will be portrayed by Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Mason Alexander Park and Donna Preston, respectively.
Harry Potter actor David Thewlis, along with the renowned broadcaster Stephen Fry has also joined the cast. Thewlis will portray Doctor Destiny aka John Dee whose endeavor to find ‘truth’ will jeopardize the entire world.
Boyd Holbrook and Vivienne Acheampong have also joined the cast as Corinthian, a nightmare and Lucienne, the librarian, respectively. We will also have Roderick Burgess, an occultist, one of the main antagonists of the show played by GoT’s Charles Dance and Patton Oswalt who will be voicing Matthew, the Raven of Dream.
Sandry James Young will be playing Unity Kincaid, Joely Richardson as Ethel Cripps, the lover of occultist Burgess, Razana Jammal has been cast as Lyta Hall and Kyo Ra is Rose Walker, who’s bodyguard Gilbert will be portrayed by Stephen Fry.
The Sandman is being developed by Allan Heinberg, who previously worked for Gilmore Girls, The O.C., and Grey’s Anatomy, amongst others. Heinberg will also executive produce the show along with The Sandman creator Neil Gaiman and David S. Goyer in association with DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Television.
Though the filming of The Sandman began in October 2020, we are still awaiting the release date from Netflix concerning The Sandman.
