One has seen various titles that have been adapted from different sources and while it may give the filmmaker a proper idea of what he is working with, it also brings a lot of pressure along with it especially if the franchise or the story has a loyal following.
The White Tiger is based on the best-selling book by Aravind Adiga which goes by the same name. it has been adapted for the screen under the direction and screenplay of Ramin Bahrani. The White Tiger does its best to show us the two opposite ends of the people who live in India. Where there are people who are living in 5-star hotels every day there are also people who cannot scrape enough to give themselves 3 meals a day.
Aravind Adiga has done a brilliant job to be uncensored and unapologetic in his book whose main aim is to show the systemic discrimination that takes place within Indian society. There are also many smart, indirect references to how technology has destroyed our lives along with the way people of different caste are treated in the rural parts of the nation.
While Aravind Adiga has been as upfront as possible what will be left to see is whether the film will be able to capture this essence in all its charm and beauty. On many occasions, one has witnessed that live adaptations have been ruined simply because of stark creative differences or steadfast minds who would not listen to any reason but I sincerely hope that The White Tiger does not fall prey to this fallacy.
The White tiger will premiere on Netflix on 22nd January.
