Watching Barbie, our favourite character since childhood, was an immensely nostalgic experience. In that theatre, we were all like kids again, eager to play with our Barbies. Greta Gerwig made this unforgettable experience possible, and we couldn’t be more grateful.
She is coming back with another one of our favourite childhood stories, the Chronicles of Narnia. But will we be able to watch it on the big screen?
Greta Gerwig has quietly expressed concerns to Netflix’s new film head, Dan Lin, about her Narnia movies being limited to Netflix’s streaming platform. She believes the epic nature of Narnia may be better suited for the big screen.
Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos stated in May 2024 that theatres aren’t essential for the platform’s success, citing the huge success of Barbie as an example. However, Gerwig seems to feel that the scale of Narnia calls for a theatrical release, as a streaming-only option could reduce the cultural impact of these adaptations.
While childhood films like Barbie and Chronicles of Narnia may do well on OTT, theatre releases can make the audience feel closer to their childhood invoking a greater sense of nostalgia and fostering a stronger sense of community. These films hold immense potential to create excitement in theatres, allowing viewers to relive the magic of their childhood on the big screen.
