Netflix has dropped the official trailer of Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical, starring Alisha Weir as the titular character.
The upcoming Netflix adaptation of the Tony Award-winning stage play has taken the form of an enthralling musical. The extended clip from the film gives us a closer look at the gigantic magical and musical sequences. But the heart of the story remains the same. Once again, we will see the courageous Matilda challenging the tyranny of the evil headmistress Ms Trunchbull (Emma Thompson).
The trailer also shows Matilda’s brilliance and her desire to learn more. Our lovely protagonist gets the support of Miss Honey (Lashana Lynch) and later from all the students of Crunchem Hall Primary School. Plus, we see her enriching herself with the courage to stand against her cruel parents who hate her creativity and passion for reading and learning.
Thompson as Trunchbull steals the limelight in the trailer. Her character will definitely scare the bejesus out of many viewers. She doesn’t like when a child defies her orders. However, things get spicy after Matilda discovers her telekinetic abilities. She utilises her powers and revolts against the wicked Ms Trunchbull with the help of other students.
The forthcoming Netflix movie is the second film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s 1988 novel after Danny DeVito’s Matilda (1996). It premiered at this year’s London Film Festival and received critical acclaim. Additionally, it has a perfect 100% rating (based on 16 reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes so far.
Matthew Warchus serves as the helmer of Matilda the Musical with a screenplay by Dennis Kelly. The film will release in selected theatres and on Netflix on December 25. Stay tuned for more updates.
