Netflix has dropped the official teaser trailer of its upcoming stop-motion animated project, Pinocchio, helmed by Guillermo del Toro. The movie’s voice cast includes Gregory Mann as Pinocchio and Ewan McGregor as Sebastian J. Cricket, who resides in our protagonist’s wooden heart and serves as the narrator. Apart from these two, we have David Bradley, Christoph Waltz, Tilda Swinton, Finn Wolfhard, Ron Perlman, Tim Blake Nelson, Cate Blanchett, and many more talents in the film’s cast.
There’s no denying that people will compare Netflix’s Pinocchio movie with Disney’s upcoming live-action project of the same name starring Tom Hanks, scheduled to hit Disney+ in September this year. It is safe to say that del Toro’s version of our beloved marionette’s tale looks way much better than Disney’s version. How? Well, first and foremost, Netflix’s design of the protagonist pays a perfect tribute to the one in Carlo Collodi’s classic 1883 novel. Also, the duo of Jim Henson Company and ShadowMachine has done a bang-up job on the film’s stop-motion animation. Plus, we have a stellar voice cast to entertain us.
Del Toro revealed his feelings about his first-ever animated project in an interview when his version of Pinocchio was announced by Netflix in 2018:
“No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio. In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world. I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember. After the incredible experience we have had on Trollhunters, I am grateful that the talented team at Netflix is giving me the opportunity of a lifetime to introduce audiences everywhere to my version of this strange puppet-turned-real-boy.”
The helmer has co-created numerous animated shows for the streaming giant including Trollhunters, 3Below, Wizards, and Pacific Rim: The Black. His upcoming version of Pinocchio will arrive on Netflix in November 2022. Stay tuned for more updates.
