Though Netflix is far from becoming the biggest platform in India in terms of audience, it is definitely a dependable source for foreign content, possessing the largest library for international content. As India’s youth states, K-dramas hold significant value.
However, it misses that ‘desi’ spice. While the audience loves Korean content, they crave the dubbed versions.
And the audience isn’t getting that. Can you really blame Netflix? Not really. They do possess some qualities of the devil, but in the case of dubbing, they are doing what’s best for business.
Though K-dramas are gaining popularity and have a very dedicated fanbase, their numbers are questionable. Especially when you consider that the majority of their fanbase usually opts for the original language with subtitles of their choice, dubbing becomes a secondary priority for Netflix.
Besides this, while dubbing might appeal to a new set of audiences, K-dramas also carry a lot of prejudice. People often tag it as cringe, and even a majority of new audiences who watch dubbed content might be skeptical before consuming it.
So, Netflix users who want to watch dubbed K-dramas should lower their expectations. Firstly, Netflix won’t just license anything and everything as it comes with a hefty charge. Secondly, dubbing takes time, effort, and dedication, which eventually won’t be worth it if it doesn’t bring in the viewership.
