Netflix’s 1899 Plagiarism Controversy: Truth, Lies & Baran Bo Odar’s Reply

By Binged Bureau - Nov 21, 2022 @ 09:11 pm

Netflix’s latest series ‘1899‘ has taken the world of streaming entertainment by storm. The new show from the makers of ‘Dark’ has generated tremendous buzz amongst fans of suspense and mystery thrillers. ‘1899’ has also shot to the number one position on Netflix in 55 countries across the world, and is in the top ten in 80+ countries.

In the midst of all the euphoria, however, lies a dark patch of despair. A Brazilian comic book artist, by the name of Mary Cagnin, has accused the makers of ‘1899’ of plagiarism. Mary Cagnin, who goes by the Twitter handle @marycagnin, has alleged that Netflix and the makers of ‘1899’, Jantje Frize and Baran bo Odar, have copied several concepts from her 2016 comic book, titled ‘Black Silence’.

In a lengthy thread on Twitter, Mary Cagnin enumerated the many similarities between Netflix’s 1899 and her comic book, ‘Black Silence’. “The Black Pyramid. The dead inside the ship. The multinational crew. Seemingly strange and unexplained things. Eye symbols and when they appear. Written codes. The voices that call them. Subtle plot details, such as characters’ personal dramas, including mysterious deaths”, she wrote on Twitter.

Mary Cagnin’s Twitter thread has got thousands of comments, likes and retweets, not to say, the attention of audiences, the media, and creator of ‘1899’ Baran bo Odar himself. Netizens are divided over the plagiarism charge leveled by Mary Cagnin. Many Twitter users, including hundreds of Brazilians, who’ve watched ‘1899’ and read ‘Black Silence’, are of the opinion that save for the black pyramid and the triangles in the eyes of the characters, nothing else is common between the two creations. They have outright rejected the claims of plagiarism by Mary Cagnin.

They’ve even alleged that Mary Cagnin is using the popularity of ‘1899’ to make her comic book viral and get more people to buy ‘Black Silence’. Interestingly, the comic is currently sold out in outlets that stocked them earlier.

Several Twitter users are supporting Mary Cagnin, saying the similarities are too close to be coincidental. They’re calling out people who are supporting Netflix and the makers Jantje Frize and Baran bo Odar on the issue.

The controversy has reached a crescendo on social media, prompting Baran bo Odar and Jantje Friese to finally speak up on the issue. This is what Jantje Friese,

And this is what Baran bo Odar said on his Instagram page,
“Unfortunately we don‘t know the artist, nor her work or the comic. we would never steal from other artists as we feel as artist ourselves. We also reached out to her so hopefully she takes back these accusations. the internet became a weird place. please more love instead of hate. thx. bo”.
