While the critical reception of American Primeval has been highly polarised (59% score on Rotten Tomatoes), viewers have certainly showered the show with a lot of love and support (86% audience score). The latest Taylor Kitsch starrer has racked up over 10 million views within its debut week of release on Netflix, and it seems this is enough for the streaming giant to consider renewing the show for a second season. However, keep in mind that Netflix has not yet renewed the show.
The series’ helmer and one of its executive producers, Peter Berg, is keeping the door open for Season 2. This is what he said when asked about a potential second season.
“You know, after we wrapped, and I looked at all the actors — the ones that were still alive — I felt such affection for them. And I do think there are many ways that we could go. I’ve still got to thaw out from my time spent up on those mountains in the winter, but maybe if they got to lower ground, that wasn’t quite as cold, we could. We could go back.”
Given American Primeval’s spectacular Netflix debut and impressive first-week viewership, the streamer should not have any problem greenlighting a second season. However, the issue lies with its storyline. Season 1 felt satisfying and conclusive, especially considering that Isaac Reed (Kitsch) is no longer alive. Reed sacrifices himself in the finale to save Sara, Devin, and Two Moons, leaving Season 2 without a clear protagonist.
Logically, Sara (Betty Gilpin) could emerge as the new lead in American Primeval Season 2, if it receives renewal approval from Netflix. She could face various threats while journeying to California. The plot might also delve into the impact of the Utah War of 1857 on the show’s characters. However, given how Season 1 ended, a second season doesn’t necessarily feel essential.
It will be hard for Sara to fill Reed’s shoes, as he is easily the show’s best and most compelling character, making him the perfect lead. It will be interesting to see how the makers handle this situation.
Stream all episodes of American Primeval now on Netflix, and stay tuned for more updates.
