Netflix’s upcoming ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ live-action series is once again in the limelight. The live-action ‘Avatar’ series has been in development since 2018. Now, things are finally ramping up. But many are wondering if it will be able to repeat the success of the live-action One Piece series, which premiered in late August. One Piece was an “unexpected” success, considering the streaming platform’s notorious history with live-action anime adaptations. It was watched by nearly 37.8 million viewers within the first two weeks of its release, amassing 285 million hours during that time.
If Netflix plays its cards right with ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’, then the series can repeat One Piece’s success. But we are damn sure it will be better than M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender (2010). What a waste of a film it was! Apart from being a huge critical and commercial failure, the film was heavily criticised for its whitewashed cast. Well, Netflix has fixed the ‘whitewashing’ issue. Let’s hope it does justice to the overall live-action series.
There are four nations in the world of Avatar: The Last Airbender – Earth Kingdoms, the Water Tribe, Air Nomads, and the Fire Nation. In every nation, certain individuals, popularly known as ‘benders’, can control and telekinetically manipulate the element corresponding to their region. To gain the status of an ‘Avatar’, one must know how to bend all four elements.
Things start to fall apart after the Fire Nation declares war with the rest of the world. This forces Aang, the current Avatar, to visit different parts of the world to master all four elements. Avatars’ responsibilities include maintaining harmony among the four nations and functioning as a bridge between spirits and humans.
We do not have the release date of Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender. Though, it is expected to come out sometime in 2024. Stay tuned for more updates.
