Netflix’s ‘Carnaval’ Shows Us A Very Different “Girl’s Trip”!

With the coronavirus cases rising around the globe, Netflix has dropped the trailer for its upcoming Brazilian buddy comedy ‘Carnaval’, which reminds us of the good old days. The film focuses on the huge Brazilian “Carnival” festival which usually takes place by the end of February or at the beginning of March and is oftentimes referred to by Brazilians as the “Greatest Show on Earth”. Check out this funny trailer at the end of this article.

One of the “younger traditional” festivals on Earth (which apparently started in Rio de Janeiro back in 1641), The Carnaval typically involves public celebrations including events such as parades, public street parties and other entertainments, combining some elements of a circus, with people wearing elaborate costumes and/ or masks. In this movie however, the film focuses on four young women who have flown to Salvador (another big Carnaval celebrating Brazilian city) to celebrate this huge festival in each other’s company.

The film mainly focuses on a young social media influencer, Nina. When she finds out that her boyfriend cheats on her with another woman, days before their huge trip to Aspen during “Carnaval”, she dumps him and takes her three girlfriends for an all-expense paid trip to Salvador. There, she meets other big influencers like her and she meets her social media idol, Luana. Luana tells her that the best way to focus on her career is to do it on her own and leave her friends behind as they will take away her main focus AKA her career.

The trailer gives us an inside look of the life of an influencer and it shows that it isn’t exactly what it is cracked up to be. Constantly posting stories, and having to live a life while making extravagant stories takes its own toll, and Nina ends up driving her friends away (as per the trailer). A buddy trip comedy film around a social media influencer is definitely “unique”, but there have been different versions of it made in Hollywood alone. Hopefully, this Brazilian girl comedy will show filmmakers a thing or two about buddy comedies.

‘Carnaval’ is expected to premiere on Netflix on June 2nd.
