Political thriller series ‘The Diplomat’ is a certified blockbuster series from streaming giant Netflix. And now, it has secured a season renewal at Netflix. Last evening, Netflix announced that it has renewed ‘The Diplomat’ for Season 2, and declared that it cannot wait to see what surprises the story throws up in the new season.
The Diplomat premiered on Netflix worldwide on 20th April. Within days of the show’s premiere, it zoomed to the Number One position on the Netflix Top Ten, in 86 countries around the world. The series has also clocked in 57.48M hours of views in its first weekend itself.
Going by the popularity and viewing numbers of ‘The Diplomat’, its second season renewal was but a given. For those who don’t know, The Diplomat stars Keri Russell as Kate Wyler, a career diplomat, who’s thrust into the high profile role of the U.S. Ambassador to the UK. It’s a role that is way out of her league, as she lands in the UK, bang in the middle of an escalating international crisis. Making matters worse is her turbulent and fast sinking marriage to former ambassador and legit political star, Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell).
Besides Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell, Netflix’s The Diplomat stars Ali Ahn as Eidra Graham, the chief of the CIA’s affairs in London. David Gyasi, Ato Essandoh, Rory Kinnear, Miguel Sandoval, Nana Mensah, Michael McKean, Pearl Mackie, among others, form the rest of the cast.
The Diplomat comes from showrunner Deborah Cahn, who’s also the creator of the series. Deborah Cahn has over the years been associated with popular shows such as Homeland, Fosse/Verde, The West Wing, Grey’s Anatomy, among others. Simon Cellan Jones, Andrew Bernstein, Liza Johnson, and Alex Graves serve as directors on the Netflix show.
