After the phenomenal streaming success of the second season of Amazon Prime Video’s rural comedy drama series ‘Panchayat’, OTT sensation Jitendra Kumar is all set for his next release – the Netflix sports comedy drama film ‘Jaadugar’. The movie will start streaming on Netflix from 15th July onwards.
The underlying premise of ‘Jaadugar’ narrates the story of a small-time struggling magician named Magic Meenu (played by Jitendra Kumar), who lives in Neemuch town in MP. Despite no interest in sports, Meenu must now lead a down and out football team and win the coveted inter-colony football tournament – in order to marry his love interest (Arushi Sharma).
Jaadugar’s basic plotline bears a striking resemblance with an underrated film directed by acclaimed filmmaker Hansal Mehta – the man behind the cult financial thriller ‘Scam 1992’ and several other hard-hitting films such as ‘Shahid’, ‘Aligarh’, ‘City Lights’, and ‘Omerta’, etc.
But the film which we are referring to is one of Hansal Mehta’s recent directorial projects. Yes, we are talking about the 2020 sports comedy drama movie ‘Chhalaang’. For those who haven’t yet seen it, the film featured Rajkummar Rao as a lazy sports instructor who competes with a superior coach to win the woman of his dreams (Nushrratt Bharuccha). ‘Chhalaang’ is currently streaming on the Amazon Prime Video OTT platform.
So, as you can see, in both Hansal Mehta’s ‘Chhalaang’ and Netflix’s upcoming movie ‘Jaadugar’, the protagonists are forced to step out of their comfort zones and lead a team of underdogs to win a sports tournament and to ultimately win the love of their lives. Considering this apparent similarity in the plotlines for both these movies, it would be interesting to see what new will ‘Jaadugar’ offer to the prospective OTT viewers. And how the added element of magic will differentiate the film from Hansal Mehta’s ‘Chhalaang’.
