Creator David Fincher broke millions of hearts when he announced that Netflix’s Mindhunter was officially over in early 2023. In January 2020, the streaming giant disclosed that the series was put on indefinite hold as the prominent filmmaker wanted to do other projects. One of the leading actors from the show, Holt McCallany (who played Bill Tench), recently talked about the possibility of Mindhunter Season 3.
In his recent interview with Awards Daily, McCallany talked about his experience while filming A24’s latest critical hit, The Iron Claw. In the film, he plays the popular patriarch of the Von Erich wrestling family, Fritz Von Erich. The actor also talked about Mindhunter’s cancellation in the interview. He has accepted the decision to cancel the series but is open to returning to it if Netflix miraculously greenlights Mindhunter Season 3 in future.
“I’ve heard that David’s thought about it [Mindhunter]. I’m not saying it’s going to come back. But what I am saying is that if it comes back, I’m coming back with it. You can take that to the bank, but it’ll depend on what David wants to do. It’s been a few years now, so it’s probably unlikely, but just even that he would think about it is a hopeful sign.”
Mindhunter is undoubtedly one of the best Netflix shows ever. Season 1 holds a ‘fresh’ Rotten Tomatoes score of 96%, based on 102 reviews. And its successor, Season 2, has an impressive 99% rating on the platform, based on 70 reviews. However, David Fincher left the project as he wanted to film Mank and, later, The Killer, both of which are now available on Netflix.
One of the biggest issues Mindhunter faced was its low viewership, despite being a substantial critical success. As a result, its existence never really justified its production budget. Fincher has also admitted that the show was “too expensive” for Netflix. Due to high production budgets and Fincher’s busy schedule, Netflix quietly buried Mindhunter for good. Stay tuned for more updates.
