Netflix has dropped the trailer of its upcoming docuseries ‘Searching For Sheela’ that revolves around Ma Anand Sheela, a controversial figure by all means. A much anticipated docuseries by Karan Johar, ‘Searching For Sheela’ is all set to launch only on Netflix on 22nd April.
Ma Anand Sheela, at one point, was the top aide of Bhagwan Osho Rajneesh. She wasn’t only his most trusted advisor but also managed his Oregon Ashram and executed his wild schemes and plots. But things changed drastically for her when she was charged and sent to jail for 20 years for the act of bio-terrorism on American soil and was also condemned by Osho himself for being a murderer.
While she got out 3 years later on parole and went to Switzerland to live a quiet life, the release of the 2018 Netflix documentary ‘Wild Wild Country’ reignited new interest in her side of the story. ‘Searching For Sheela’ trailer shows her return to India after 34 years of exile and how people can’t seem to get enough of her.
Through a series of public interviews, Netflix’s ‘Searching For Sheela’ offers an intimate look into Ma Anand Sheela’s journey across India, observing the rebranding of her as a pop-culture icon, with audiences unable to decide if they deem her a criminal or remain in awe of her badass secretary days.
The docuseries will raise questions, both tough and intriguing, as to why Sheela, now in her 70s, chose to come out if she didn’t care much? Is she seeking redemption? And if yes, will she be able to attain it while the world has had long retained assumptions about her? ‘Searching For Sheela’ on Netflix will attempt to answer these very questions.
‘Searching For Sheela’ is produced by Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, and Somen Mishra, under Dharmatic and Jouska Films. Shakun Batra is executive producing.
