Netflix is set to partner with sporting events organizer A.S.O. on a documentary series about the 2022 Tour de France cycling race. The show will follow the journey of eight teams taking part in the famed cycling race. The show will be produced jointly by Quad and Box to Box Films. Box to Box Films is the producer of the popular Netflix show ‘Drive to Survive’ – series following Formula One teams as they participate in the racing season.
The Tour de France is an annual men’s multiple-stage bicycle race primarily held in France while also occasionally passing through nearby countries. It consists of 21 stages, each a day long, over the course of 23 days. It is said to be one of the most challenging races and the ultimate challenge for bicycle racers.
The documentary will have eight episodes and cover cyclists to team managers in an effort to understand the multiple stakes of a race. The eight teams participating are – AG2R Citroën Team, Alpecin-Fenix, BORA-hansgrohe, EF Education-EasyPost, Groupama-FDJ cycling Team, Ineos Grenadiers, Team Jumbo-Visma, and Team Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl.
Filming for the show has already begun and crew from Netflix and France Televisions will follow the teams through the race till July. The show will be released on Netflix in early 2023.
Netflix’s show on Formula One (Drive to Survive) was appreciated by audiences and helped the sport increase its reach beyond its fanbase. The show is said to be F1’s best marketing initiative drawing in more eyeballs for the sport itself. ASO, organizer of the Tour de France, are hoping for a similar result. It also hopes to offer existing fans an inside view of the events that take place during the race. Will this show do to cycling what Drive to Survive did for F1 in terms of popularity? Time will tell.
