Disney Plus Hotstar is revamping its subscription plans from 1st September onwards. It is putting to bed its old two-plan subscription system, where subscribers could choose between Disney Plus Hotstar VIP, priced at ₹399 for the annual plan, and Disney Plus Hotstar Premium, priced at ₹1499 for annual subscription. In place of the old system, it will bring into effect a new three-tier subscription system, thus allowing it to cater to a wide strata of audiences.
The one significant difference between the old subscription system and the new one is that there will be no demarcation of content between Premium and non-premium accounts, as it was before. All content will be available to stream for all subscribers, irrespective of the plan they choose – including Hotstar Specials, Disney Plus content, Marvel content, National Geographic content, Star Wars content, HBO Originals, Hollywood films, including new releases – in short, all content that was previously available only for Disney Plus Hotstar Premium subscribers.
Instead, the three plans will be differentiated on the basis of the number of users that can stream content simultaneously on a particular plan, and the resolution at which content will stream. The new Disney Plus Hotstar subscription plans are hence quite similar to the subscription plans offered by Netflix in India.
The new subscription plans consist of the following options –
1. Disney+ Hotstar Mobile –
* priced at Rs. 499 for the annual subscription
* allows streaming on mobile only – one mobile device, in HD resolution
2. Disney Plus Hotstar Super –
* priced at Rs. 899 for the annual subscription
* allows simultaneous streaming on two devices – which could be any devices, and in HD Resolution
3. Disney Plus Hotstar Premium –
* priced at Rs. 1,499 for the annual subscription
* allows simultaneous streaming on four devices – which could be any devices, and in both HD and 4K resolution
The new subscription plans will come into effect from 1st September. They were introduced this afternoon at a virtual event, along with the announcement of a brand new slate of 18 upcoming films and shows that will debut on Disney Plus Hotstar in the coming months.
