New Netflix Series ‘The Bequeathed’ From Train To Busan’s Yeon Sang-ho

Netflix is taking its relationship with ‘Train To Busan’ director Yeon Sang-ho up a notch. After premiering ‘Hellbound’ from Yeon Sang-ho last year on its platform, Netflix has now picked up a new series from the stellar director. Titled ‘The Bequeathed’, the under-production series is a suspense thriller with supernatural elements.

The difference between ‘The Bequeathed’ and Yeon Sang-ho‘s ‘Hellbound‘ is that the filmmaker is attached to the former as writer and creator. He will not be directing ‘The Bequeathed’, as he did with Hellbound. The new Netflix series will be directed by Min Hong-nam, who has previously been Assistant Director on Yeon Sang-ho’s earlier projects, namely Train to Busan, Psychokinesis and Peninsula.

‘The Bequeathed’ centres on the age-old Korean tradition of owning family burial grounds. Protagonist Yun Seo-ha, played by Kim Hyun-joo of ‘Hellbound’ fame, inherits family burial land upon the sudden death of her uncle. Soon, strange events start taking place around her; events linked to deeply buried secrets in her family. Police Detective Choi Seong-jun (Park Hee-soon) helps her unravel the connection between the mysterious events and the burial ground she inherits.

Park Byung-eun and Ryu Kyung-soo play crucial roles in ‘The Bequeathed’. Interestingly, the series was earlier titled ‘Family Gravesite’, but is now titled as ‘The Bequeathed’. Han Cinema has described the series as a story “that depicts villagers turning into zombies with unknown symptoms”.

‘The Bequeathed’ is produced by Wow Point and Red Peter Films (Peninsula, Psychokinesis, Train to Busan). There’s no release date yet for ‘The Bequeathed’ on Netflix, only that it will be released worldwide by the streaming giant.
