Marvel is set to gear up for the production of the sequel to Shang Chi, which was a spectacular commercial hit at the peak of the pandemic, collecting around $400 million and above worldwide. Helmed by Destin Daniel Cretton, it has now surfaced that it will begin production in 2025 and it will have Simu Liu reprising his phenomenal role of the titular character and Cretton will also be responsible for its writing.
Liu’s depiction of Shang Chi in the first movie has placed him well into the hearts of the viewers, and it has also solidified his stature in the MCU as a pivotal character, with there being hints of how he is crucial to the progression of Phases 5 and 6 of the MCU. While there is speculation of Shang Chi battling Kang alongside the Avengers in “Avengers: The Kang Dynasty”, nothing concrete has come up yet.
As the MCU moves forward, it is faced with a few conundrums. Owing to the departure of Jonthan Majors who played Kang, the lack of a big name villain similar to Thanos is a hindrance to their story telling efforts. The Shang Chi sequel will mark Liu’s return to the MCU after a huge gap, and fans are eager to see the character’s progression as the Marvel’s cinematic saga continues.
