Egyptian-American director Lotfy Nathan rose to fame when his debut documentary ’12 O’Clock Boys’ earned him the HBO Emerging Artist Award, and was selected in over 50 international festivals, including SXSW, Sundance LA, Lincoln Center, London, and Copenhagen.
Next up for him is ‘The Carpenter’s Son’, a feature exploring the rarely talked about stories of the childhood of Jesus. The catch? The feature is all set to have horror undertones! Moreover, he has high-profile names like Nicolas Cage, FKA Twigs, Noah Jupe and Souheila Yacoub on board for the ensemble cast.
Nathan has drawn inspiration for the project from the biblical writing ‘Infancy Gospel of Thomas’ for the screenplay. Dating back to the 2nd Century AD, the text recounts tales of Jesus’ childhood.
The plot narrates the dark story of a family hiding out in Roman Egypt. The son, known only as ‘the Boy’, is driven to doubt by another mysterious child. So, he rebels against his guardian, the Carpenter, revealing inherent powers and a fate beyond his comprehension. As he comes to exercise his own power, him and his family become the target of horrors, both natural and divine.
Oscar-winner Cage will play the Carpenter. Grammy-nominated artist FKA Twigs will take on the role of the Mother and Jupe will play the Boy.
