“The Undoing”, an HBO limited series coming up Disney+ Hotstar on the 25th of October is classed under the genre of psychological drama tells the story of a wealthy, married woman and her family after a dark crime shatters their lives apart. The story though focuses on the family; it tells us more about the struggle of the woman in it.
Starring Nicole Kidman as Grace Fraser, a successful and wealthy therapist who lives a happy life with her husband, Jonathan played by Hugh Grant, and her son Noah who lives in New York City and belongs to a very elite tier of people in society. Life doesn’t stay as sweet and normal as it seems to her when a vicious murder of a woman takes away every ounce of her family’s peace. Her life shatters even more when she comes to know and realizes the connections of her beloved husband with this gruesome crime. As time passes by and she dives even deeper, shock rips her life as she gets to know the darker secrets of her husband and what he has been up to. It makes it even more difficult as she finds herself alone in this while Jonathan is nowhere to be seen.
Just like how the lives of most married women go, misfortune and darkness don’t differentiate between rich and poor. It befalls on everyone equally. Grace comes to realize this reality in a hard way as she goes on to deal with all the matters and save and protect her family from the eyes of society. She is left alone to deal with the secrets and bad deeds her husband has kept hidden from the world and her. This might resonate with every woman out there as it is expected from the woman of the house to protect and look out for her husband and family, in front of society.
The question of how much a woman suffers and fights for her family selflessly comes back again with this thriller. Supported by a mind-blowing cast of Donald Sutherland, Edgar Ramirez, Noma Dumezweni, The Undoing will reflect a lot on a woman’s ability to stand strong and fearless.
