The long-awaited animated adaptation of ND Stevenson’s graphic novel, Nimona, is arriving on Netflix on June 30. And the streaming giant has dropped the animated flick’s official teaser.
Nimona is a story about a shape-shifting girl with a monster-brat attitude who insists on becoming the sidekick of a wronged knight, Ballister Blackheart, in a futuristic sci-fi world.
Here’s the official Netflix synopsis of the upcoming animated film:
A knight is framed for a crime he didn’t commit and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen who might also be a monster he’s sworn to kill. Set in a techno-medieval world unlike anything animation has tackled before, this is a story about the labels we assign to people and the shapeshifter who refuses to be defined by anyone.
A minute-long teaser offers a lot, starting with Nimona (voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz) drawing a Disney-style fairy tale. However, she ruins that tale by setting up the castle on fire with the help of a dragon. It seems like Netflix tried to mock Disney’s classic fairy tales with this scene.
The forthcoming animated project was originally a production of Blue Sky Studios (prominent for Ice Age movies). However, Disney buried the project after it acquired 20th Century Fox, the parent company of Blue Sky Studios. According to Business Insider, one of Blue Sky’s employees revealed that Disney showed no interest in Nimona as it did not want to feature a gay couple as the leading duo.
Although, the second half of the teaser shows the actual animation style of Nimona, which shares a striking similarity to Arcane’s animation style. It displays the titular character, a gorilla, a whale, and other animals. Additionally, the final moments of the teaser give a brief look at Ballister Blackheart (voiced by Riz Ahmed). The film also has Eugene Lee Yang, who has lent his voice to the character of Ambrosius Goldenloin. It will release on Netflix on June 30. Stay tuned for more updates.
