Malayalam star Nivin Pauly‘s much-awaited film ‘Thuramukham’ has been waiting in the wings since long, for want of a proper theatrical release date for it. The Covid-19 pandemic and its related restrictions in cinema halls meant that the film set several release dates in the last year, only to be postponed. Well, now ‘Thuramukham’ finally has a release date! The period drama is all set to release exclusively in theatres on 3rd June, 2022.
Thuramukham is a period drama film, directed by Rajeev Ravi. The screenplay has been written by Gopan Chidambaran. It is based on the play of the same name by his father, K. M. Chidambaran. The film stars Nivin Pauly and Nimisha Sajayan in lead roles, along with Poornima Indrajith, Indrajith Sukumaran, Arjun Ashokan, Sudev Nair, Manikandan R. Achari, Darshana Rajendran star in pivotal roles.
Thuramukham is set in the backdrop of forties and fifties Kochi. It shines a spotlight on the cruel ‘Chhapa’ system of allotting work to workers in the Kochi harbour. Tokens called ‘Chhapas’ were thrown amidst the workers. Whoever managed to get their hands on the tokens would get to work in the docks on that particular day. The system was unjust and brutal, leading to fights among the workers, and several deaths.
Thuramukham was one of the films that was stuck without a release date in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic. The film has been ready for release for quite some time. It was first set for a theatrical release in May 2021, which was postponed to Diwali 2021, then December 2021, then January, 2022. In the midst of all the delays, there was heavy speculation Thuramukham would skip theatres and release directly on OTT, much like a number of recent Malayalam films.
Thankfully, Thuramukham is finally releasing in the theatres. It is a hard-hitting film that deserves to be enjoyed on the big screen. The film releases in theatres on 3rd June, 2022.
