The malayalam language court-room satire ‘Nna Thaan Case Kodu‘ theatrically released on 11th August, 2022. The film clashed with Tovino Thomas starrer ‘Thallumaala’ at the Kerala box-office. Not only did both the films get critically applauded, both emerged as blockbusters at the box-office. Both the films released on streaming closer to each other as well. While Thallumaala hit Netflix India, Nna Thaan Case Kodu hit Disney+Hotstar.
While both films are trending on top on their respective streaming platforms, the hooplah around Thallumaala is much more than Nna Thaan Case Kodu. The dichotomy of how both the films got received by the streaming audience shows a different picture. While Thallumaala has been garnering great appreciation on social media after it dropped on Netflix, the same reception is not seen for Nna Thaan Case Kodu. While the latter is arguably a better film overall, it seems like the packaging matters as well for the streaming audience. Thallumaala being a rooted, non-linear, colourful film with Edgar Wright-Wes Anderson-esque aesthetics attracted more of the gen Z and millennial crowd for its colours, appealing songs and well choreographed stunts. Nna Thaan Case Kodu on the other hand is a less colourful, rooted but equally engaging courtroom comedy that is getting watched and appreciated by an albeit smaller movie-buff crowd.
The way in which two equally successful blockbuster Malayalam movies got recieved by the streaming audience makes us wonder if the audience is wholeheartedly accepting of every good content put out on streaming, Or if the packaging of the content and its universality edges over content. One could also infer that when given a choice, people prefer content that has a more mainstream appeal over a better film with a lesser mainstream appeal. However, in our opinion both films serve entertainment and both deserves to be watched. Stay tuned for more updates.
