The Matt Reeves Batman Universe is ready to expand, and before the Bat shows up on the screen again we will get to see the rise of a rather peculiar bird. The Penguin is all set to take over the Gotham underworld in the new series. But of course, this Elseworlds story is not about Oswald Cobblepot, AKA Penguin. The question remains: Where is Batman?
For everyone’s disappointment, Battinson won’t make an appearance throughout the 8-episode run, and makers have provided a fair reason. The showrunner for the Penguin, Lauren LeFranc, has spoken up about the matter, and here’s what he had to say: “His (Matt Reeves) version of Gotham City is very grounded. Batman’s not everywhere. It’s a big city!” and that’s why we won’t get any bat action for now. Adding on to the argument, LeFranc says that this Batman “doesn’t really pay much attention to Oz,” considering him not worth his time. The last we saw of the penguin was the owner of the 44 BELOW club. Even his position as Falcone’s right-hand man is up to debate now that so many contenders are vulturing over the organized crime sector of Gotham.
This, however, is a good choice, as it won’t do Farrell’s character much justice to play the second fiddle in his own show. The show will probably see his rise as a mob boss, setting him up for a future confrontation with Bruce by the end of the show’s run on MAX. The Penguin will be available to stream on September 19, 2024.
