After the disaster that was Joker: Folie A Deux, fans are still waiting for the next accurate portrayal of Gotham’s Clown Prince of Crime. And while the last interpretation of the iconic character was awesome by all means, the final reveal made it evident that Arthur Fleck was not the Joker. While the Jared Leto DCEU joker was bashed all around and James Gunn is yet to find his own clown, all eyes fell upon Barry Keoghan’s version from the Matt Reeves The Batman. And much to their disappointment, there’s still time to see him in all of his insane glory.
The movie introduced us to a much grounded Gotham. One that was full of gangs and mobsters, and for Batman, the biggest problem was not some otherworldly threat but a serial killer that was indulging in extreme vigilantism. All of this set up the tone of the universe quite nicely, and fans were thus waiting for this world’s Joker to show up and deliver beyond expectations.
Barry Keoghan’s Joker didn’t appear in the movie. But the voice was heard in the end where he was making the Riddler his acquaintance. Later on, a brief deleted scene surfaced, which made the fans go haywire. Overall, fans were expecting a project centered around Joker. Especially after the success of The Penguin, when the showrunners showed interest in making more projects centered around the rogues gallery of the Batman.
However, the main man, James Gunn, has denied any such series being in development. In a way, it is a good thing. The medium is riddled with both good and bad interpretations of the joker. The problem of oversaturation, along with the constant scaling of the portrayals, makes every joker project a risky business.
Not just that, the character is a hindrance to any story that aims at fleshing out the characters in a new universe. As the focus shifts permanently to the clown. Overall, there are more fun villain dynamics to showcase when it comes to Batman and his Gotham.
