The Malayalam film industry is easily one of the best in the world. Not only do they make great films but the consistency with which they do so is remarkable. Not only that, the credit also goes to the audience who keeps on supporting such movies with all their heart.
PVR and INOX are easily one of the largest and most influential cinema chains in India. One takes care of the premium experience while the other is a little more affordable. They are extremely powerful bodies in India’s cinema chain and they continue to be so.
But, there is a clash going on between them. And it is turning more and more dramatic.
What has happened so far? Read from the link below.
PVR-INOX Bans All Malayalam Movies On Eid; But Who’s To Blame?
Why is the clash even happening though?
Money money money.
Kerala’s film producers have long voiced their opposition to a fee called the Virtual Print Fee (VPF), which they have to pay to screen their films in large multiplexes like PVR and INOX. They argue that these fees eat into their profits. And for small films, this indeed matters.
The situation turned topsy turvy when PVR and INOX expressed objections when KFPA’s decided to set up its own content-providing company.
In response, they not only stopped the screening of Malayalam films in Kerala but also pulled their dubbed versions from theaters in other states. Bad for the fans and cinema alike!
This move has affected not only the producers but also those who were to dub these films into other languages.
For instance, in Telangana, the Telugu dubbed versions of ‘Premalu’ and ‘Manjummel Boys’ were swiftly removed from theaters.
Despite attempts at negotiation, no positive resolution has been reached so far. PVR and INOX have made no plans to screen any Malayalam films in the near future. So, the industry is bound to keep suffering.
But, what are the producers saying? The industry has decided never to screen any Malayalam film on PVR-INOX until or unless they get compensation for losses from PVR INOX.
B Unnikrishnan, the general secretary of FEFKA, criticized PVR and INOX. He accused them of disrespecting Malayalis. He mentioned that the association is considering taking legal action against PVR and INOX and has already discussed the matter with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Lulu Group MD MA Yusuffali.
This is getting more and more dramatic. Sadly, ‘Aavesham’ and ‘Varshangalkku Shesham’ will remain out of reach for fans.
Let’s see what happens next.
