“You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”
As far as his recent comments are concerned, it seems as though prolific American filmmaker Todd Phillips has taken this quote by the popular DC Universe character Harvey Dent very seriously.
A little background:
Having received wide prominence in the early 2010s for directing ‘The Hangover’ film series, Phillips took the world by storm with his 2019 directorial venture ‘Joker’. Not only did the film win Joaquin Phoenix an Academy Award, but it also shook fans with its gripping cinematography and overall delivery, only to leave them wanting for more.
And that hunger is being satiated as fans receive timely updates about the highly awaited sequel ‘Joker: Folie à Deux’, that continues to follow one of the most iconic villains of all time – The Joker. Starring Phoenix and Lady Gaga in leading roles, the musical thriller film seems to be the last one in the Joker franchise.
Despite the fact that ‘Joker’ is one of the only two R-rated titles in the billion-dollar club, Phillips’ comments that “we’ve said what we wanted to say in this world”, practically confirm the end of an era (why does it matter that it will only be 2 features long? an era, nonetheless).
On one hand this is unfortunate news, but on the other, brighter side, the franchise will conclude at its peak. And what better than to leave audiences not disappointed, but forever wanting more?
