South-Indian cinema enthusiasts can rest easy, but sorry OTT fans, this news will probably leave most of you extremely unhappy – Bahubali’s Prabhas’ upcoming feature flick ‘Radhe Shyam’, Superstar Yash’s ‘K.G.F Chapter 2’ and S.S. Rajmouli’s 2021 action period drama ‘RRR’ featuring NTR Jr. and Ram Charan will not be released direct to streaming. All three films are going through the final stages of post-production and the production companies think that they can garner more profits by releasing the features straight in theaters, and have decided not to shrink the films (just yet) for the home media.
Yash’s ‘K.G.F Chapter 2’ has Raveena Tandon and Sanjay Dutt (who will be the primary antagonist) starring in the big-budget blockbuster and the lead actor says that the sequel to ‘K.G.F: Chapter 1’ is a film that was made for the theaters and hence should be first released through them. Sources close to all three projects have confirmed that even though they have been offered lucrative deals for the streaming rights of the film, they will not succumb to the pressure.
‘K.G.F Chapter 2’ and ‘RRR’ are being offered huge amounts of money by multiple leading OTT platforms. Both films have been offered a deal ranging between Rupees 150 crores and 200 crores, but the production houses are not budging. Recently streaming giants Netflix and Apple have been aggressively pursuing the latest Bond flick, ‘No Time To Die’ for their streaming platform. If they can do that, we are sure a lot of South-Indian Production houses are being bombarded with offers as of late.
Even Malayalam films like ‘One’ and ‘Kurup’ have been given multiple tempting offers to be released directly on OTT – and ‘Kurup’ might actually go for it. If this happens, the Dulquer Salman produced and starring feature will be the first big-budget Mollywood film to release directly to OTT. But for now, we will just have to wait and see.
