Many ready web series are finding it difficult to find a buyer in the OTT market. Most streaming platforms are commissioning originals to directors and creators and also producing them at the same time. Apart from that, most OTT giants have many titles already locked in the pipeline and there is no space for the introduction of new content.
During the lockdown period, there was a massive surge in the demand of online content. But production process was stagnant and there was nothing new at all. At this point many platforms were compelled to buy ready web shows. Many average shows got their way up due to this reason during the lockdown.
Now, however, platforms are not buying mediocre ready shows. Quality is now more a important element as the platforms are themselves spending much in the productions.
But is it good news? Well, obviously not for the aspiring directors who make small budget web series and pitch it to companies. There is little chance for, if their content does not have a voice. But for the audiences, it is a good thing. They will not have to tolerate average shows by subscribing to such expensive platforms. There would be much trust in the shows that are streaming.
Nimisha Pandey, chief content officer of Hindi originals at ZEE5 has said, “There is no space for average fare, and every platform has its pipeline, so there is no shortage. It may seem like bad news for some, but it just means that mediocrity will no longer survive. Great content will always find takers.” But for audiences, it means more quality content.
