No-Trailer Strategy for Prithviraj’s ‘Gold’ a Double-Edged Sword?

No-Trailer Strategy for Prithviraj’s ‘Gold’ a Double-Edged Sword?

Acclaimed filmmaker Alphonse Puthren, as you might already know, is making his directorial comeback with the star-studded comedy drama movie ‘Gold’, after a hiatus of around seven years. His debut film – the suspense thriller ‘Neram’ and his subsequent venture ‘Premam’ were quite well received by the audiences and critics. So, the curiosity quotient around ‘Gold’ is palpable.

‘Gold’, featuring Prithviraj Sukumaran and Nayanthara in the lead roles, is expected to release in theatres on 8th September 2022 in Tamil and Malayalam during the Onam festival. The film also features Ajmal Ameer, Shabareesh Varma, Krishna Sankar, Roshan Mathew, and Chemban Vinod Jose, amongst other talented cast members.

Surprisingly, with just a couple of weeks left for the film’s release, no trailer has been released by the makers so far. The reason? It’s because they have apparently decided not to release even one trailer for the film. In fact, as per the latest buzz, there would only be one song promo for ‘Gold’ before its theatrical release.

The question is: Will the ‘No Trailer’ release strategy for ‘Gold’ go well with prospective audiences? And will it create more hype and an increased interest about the film amongst movie goers?

You might not recall any proper multi-starrer commercial film in India or elsewhere which didn’t release even a single trailer before the film’s release in theatres. So, the makers of ‘Gold’ seem to have adopted a bold, novel and a never-heard-before strategy by not releasing any trailer at all. However, it seems to be a double-edged sword.

Because it’s an age-old tradition that any film’s trailer gives its audience a basic idea about the film’s genre, premise, characters, etc. – to help them decide whether to watch the film or not. A song-promo, most likely, won’t give us anything on the film’s plotline.

The makers of ‘Gold’ had unveiled the movie’s teaser video a few months back featuring a short clip from the film followed by its main character’s introductions. So, it might be an intentional strategy on the part of the makers to not disclose the plot idea and other details beforehand. It remains to be seen whether the movie goers will flock to theatres to watch the film on the basis of the filmmaker’s impressive filmography and its ensemble cast and without any notions about the film.

Another strikingly different approach was taken by the makers of Prithviraj Sukumaran and Suraj Venjaramood starrer critically acclaimed legal thriller ‘Jana Gana Mana’. The makers had released an almost 4-minute sequence featuring Prithviraj for its official trailer which didn’t reveal anything significant about the film’s plotline. But the film clicked big time with the audiences.

Coming back to ‘Gold’, the film recently became the talk of the town after the makers had revealed its intriguing first poster in a kaleidoscopic-like design, which the netizens opined that it was inspired by the poster of the widely acclaimed multiverse movie ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’.

However, the director Alphonse Puthren later clarified that even the poster of his debut film ‘Neram’ (2013) had a similar design. Let’s see what kind of response Alphonse Puthren’s ‘Gold’ gets after its theatrical release. We hope that ‘Gold’ will turn out to be another unique movie in his filmography. Despite being a trailer-less movie, or perhaps, to an extent, because of it. Meanwhile, watch the ‘Gold’ teaser below.
