Earlier the Blu-Ray version of films in physical cassettes used to be sold a few months after the theatrical release.
Physical cassettes were replaced by streaming services due to the shift from analogue to digital formats. Streaming offered instant access to a vast library of films without the need for physical storage or the limitations of cassettes. Convenience, portability, and the ability to explore a wide range of music contributed to the transition.
Streaming services like Netflix, Hulu, and others revolutionized how people consume movies. Viewers gained the ability to stream films on-demand, leading to a decline in traditional video rental services. This shift influenced distribution models, with streaming platforms producing original content, changing the dynamics of film production, distribution, and audience engagement.
But, looks like Christopher Nolan wants to change the game. Oppenheimer was no ordinary film. When Hollywood portals projected the dismal box office collection of the film, it went on earnings more than $950 Million at the box office.
But, the film will keep on surprising. It was released the same day as Barbie but the Greta Gerwig film has been streaming for months now. However, we all are still waiting for Oppenheimer.
Christopher Nolan is of the opinion that he would rather prefer physical cassettes to streaming services because fans don’t know when a particular streaming service loses hold of any film.
Nolan stated:
“There is a danger, these days, that if things only exist in the streaming version they do get taken down, they come and go.”
Looks like Nolan is adamant on selling the physical cassettes of Oppenheimer. The question remains, will other directors follow?
If they do, what will happen to the streaming services?
These questions will remain unanswered by the time we see the effect of this decision. Let’s wait if this remains a one time phenomenon or transforms into a revolution.
