Academy-award-winning actor Russell Crowe has been in the news multiple times lately by virtue of his upcoming film of the demon extraction genre ‘The Exorcism’.
Joshua John Miller’s directorial venture will see an exclusive theatrical release beginning on June 7 as the freshest take on the exorcism genre, following the lead of 1973’s ‘The Exorcist’, like numerous others. Crowe will star as actor Anthony Miller who begins to unravel while filming a supernatural horror film: not just a relapse into former addiction issues, but something far more sinister.
Set against the backdrop of cool blue monotones, the trailer explores mishaps as they follow the production of the film. Leaking taps, creaking doors, scribbled-on-religious-texts seem to be a recurring trio throughout the teaser.
Watching her father deteriorate in front of her eyes, Miller’s estranged daughter is left with no choice but to approach a priest for help. The plot of the film relies heavily on the history of ‘cursed’ Hollywood movies.
Co-writer and directed by Miller is the son of ‘Exorcist’ star Jason Miller. This adds an entirely personal and nuanced layer to the legacy of the genre. Alongside Crowe, the feature stars several highly recognizable faces: Sam Worthington, Chloe Bailey, Adam Goldberg, Samantha Mathis, and a priestly David Hyde Pierce.
