The August theatrical releases of Malayalam flicks have received less acclaim and the least positive response from the audience. The month wasn’t able to present remarkable efforts- both content and economic-wise which didn’t have much shake in the industry.
This month was all about controversies happening in the film industry and it is continuing. Even though all the movies were conceived on a limited budget, the Lack of efficient storytelling and theatrical effect which was lost somewhere in the middle could be a reason. But that won’t be fruitful if it goes the same.
An altogether of 11 movies of various genres were released during this period starting with ‘Adios Amigo (on the 2nd day), ‘Cicada’, ‘Ormachithram’, ‘Super Zindagi’ and ‘Memory Plus’ on the 9th day, ‘Nunakuzhi’ on the 15th day, ‘Karnika’, ‘Footage’, ‘Thaanara’, ‘Hunt’ and ‘Paalum Pazhavum on 23rd day respectively.
More than half of the total films released were thriller in genre and the other half were comedy-drama of nature. There is a little but better movement for the comedy-thriller flick ‘Nunakuzhi’ (Eng. Dimple) which is directed by Jeethu Joseph and features actors Basil Joseph and Grace Antony in lead roles. All the other movies are reported to be washed out from the theatres within one week or two from its release which had the least to negative response from the critics.
The lack of the capability in engaging for a thriller flick by being a predictable culmination is another demerit for which none were able to stand out. Movies like ‘Hunt’ and ‘Cicada’ had a better story idea but worsened its construction.
The same happened with the movies having the comedy-drama genre like ‘Thaanara’, ‘Super Zindagi’ and ‘Paalum Pazhavum’ which had mediocre performances and difficulty in convincing humour. There was much expectation and hype from the regional audience for the movie ‘Adios Amigo’ because it featured actors like Asif Ali and Suraj Venjaramoodu which they couldn’t satisfy the hope. The movie didn’t connect with the viewers due to its weak storytelling and lack of establishing the plot device.
‘Footage’ directed by Saiju Sreedharan was creative in its technical labour but the story is way complicated. Also, character placement was very dull and actors like Manju Warrier and Vishak Nair couldn’t perform at their optimum.
‘Karnika’ is a mystery-mythological thriller which is a rare approach to regional cinema. The lack of bankable actors and less concentration in quality-making would be the reason for not performing well. The same happened with ‘Ormachithram’ which talked about the conventional romantic drama of genre in nature.
The upcoming two releases, ‘Bharatanatyam’ and ‘Manorajyam’ are expected to get comparatively better responses according to their teaser and trailer aids.
