Believe it or not, “ad-phobia” is now a real issue and it’s playing a significant role in the entertainment industry. When it comes to bad experiences, excessive advertisements have been a major factor in the decline of Linear Cable, and if you’ve been keeping up with recent events, these same ads are now haunting the OTT audience as well.
Now, PVR INOX is following suit. If you’ve been to the theaters recently, you’re already familiar with the problem—many movie theaters are showing ad sequences for up to half an hour. The situation is, frankly, pathetic.
The theater business is not the most profitable, that much is clear. To generate revenue, PVR INOX has already hiked up the prices of food and drinks, which has turned many people off. When that doesn’t generate enough revenue, PVR tries to make up for it by selling more ad slots.
Realistically, they’re not in this for charity, that’s for sure. But what could help keep audiences coming back to the cinema is making the experience just a bit better. From the low quality of advertisements to the sheer volume of them, PVR INOX might be making good revenue from ads, but they’re not being efficient at all.
More than ever, ads play a determining role. As OTT prices rise and movie tickets aren’t getting any cheaper, shorter ad sequences could actually benefit theaters. And it’s not just INOX causing this frustration; thanks to Cinepolis, INOX is actually starting to look like “the good guy” because they maintain certain “standards” when it comes to showcasing ads.
Relying on ads is irreplaceable for the Indian market where ticket costs are quite moderate. But as PVR INOX or Cinepolis or other chains are making it insufferable, this will definitely affect the Cinema Hall Experience in a bad way.
It’s important for theaters to survive, but bombarding the audience with 30 minutes of ads is just disrespecting their time. They’re already overpaying for tickets and the “chai samosa,” and the bad ads are just the unwelcome bonus. Welcome to the new normal, we suppose.

My show was suppose to start at 12.25pm. Your ads delayed the movie by half an hour and the movie started at 12.55pm. As soon as the interval started, you showed another 20 mins of ads.
