Star Wars! Its fanbase has showered the space opera franchise with immense love and support for so long. However, it has never been shy from keeping itself out of controversies. The latest addition to the long list of controversies related to the Star Wars fanbase is the racist comments against Moses Ingram. She portrays Reva Sevander/The Third Sister in the Obi-Wan Kenobi Disney+ series.
Moses Ingram is best known for playing Jolene in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit. She even bagged an Emmy nomination in the category of Outstanding Supporting Actress for the miniseries. Plus, she has donned the character of Lady Macduff in Joel Coen’s The Tragedy of Macbeth. In March 2021, she joined the cast of Obi-Wan Kenobi along with Kumail Nanjiani, Indira Verma, Sung Kang, Rupert Friend, O’Shea Jackson Jr, and Benny Safdie.
The Star Wars franchise is supporting Moses Ingram after the actress disclosed she had received tons of racist comments and hate messages on various social media platforms. Even Obi-Wan Kenobi himself, Ewan McGregor, has shared a video of him supporting Ingram and calling the haters “not Star Wars fans”.
“There’s nothing anybody can do about this. There’s nothing anybody can do to stop this hate,” Ingram said in one of her Instagram stories. The Star Wars franchise is not unfamiliar with racism issues. Stars like John Boyega and Kelly Marie Tran also faced strong and degrading racial comments while working in the Sequel trilogy. A portion of the fanbase started trending #blackstormtrooper and condemned Boyega’s casting. On the other hand, Tran left social media because of the hate and humiliation she received for her character in The Last Jedi. Both performers are best known for portraying FN-2187/Finn and Rose Tico respectively.
“There are more than 20 million sentient species in the Star Wars galaxy, don’t choose to be a racist,” the official Star Wars page tweeted after discovering hate messages directed toward Moses Ingram. Some of them even included the N-word. Obi-Wan Kenobi is currently streaming on the Disney+ streaming service.
