“Things in the woods are not the only things that may harm you.” The official trailer for the Swedish adventure series Ronja the Robber’s Daughter, which is based on the book by Pippi Longstocking creator Astrid Lindgren, has been released on Netflix. The live-action version will launch in two parts this spring as a six-episode limited series on Netflix. Ronja the Robber’s Daughter chronicles the exploits of a bold and disobedient young woman who was raised in a medieval Scandinavian castle by a group of thieves. As Ronja gets older, she learns about the weird and enigmatic animals who live in the enchanted but deadly forest.
However, she feels more at home in the forest than in the massive castle’s walls. A legendary bailiff arrives to clear the forest of thieves, and when Ronja meets the little boy Birk from a rival gang, a terrible family rivalry and forbidden relationship begin. With Jack Bergenholtz-Henriksson, Christopher Wagelin, Krista Kosonen, Sverrir Gudnason, Maria Nohra, Pernilla August, Vera Vitali, and Johan Ulveson in supporting roles, Kerstin Linden plays Ronja in the film. It appears like Netflix is trying to create a Swedish version of Game of Thrones that young viewers may enjoy and take lessons from.
According to Netflix “This year marks the return of the cherished Swedish fantasy-tale Ronja the Robber’s Daughter, which follows Ronja (Kerstin Linden) as she explores the beautiful, perilous forest home to its enigmatic animals as she gets older. A nasty family conflict and an illicit friendship begin when Ronja meets the young Birk from a rival gang. Meanwhile, a renowned bailiff shows here to finally purge the forest of thieves.” The Swedish limited series Ronja the Robber’s Daughter, also called Ronja Rövardotter, was written and produced by Hans Rosenfeldt (“The Bridge”, “Marcella”, “Rebecca”) and is based on an Astrid Lindgren story (from the book).
The show is directed by Lisa James Larsson, a Swedish director who has previously directed the television shows “En kunglig affär,” “Striking Out,” “Britannia,” and “Agatha Christie’s Hjerson.” She also directed the movie Ego. Produced by Mattias Arehn and Bonnie Skoog Feeney. Produced by Filmlance International with assistance from Creative Europe and the European Union, in collaboration with Viaplay, Film i Väst, Ahil, and ARD Degeto. The Ronja the Robber’s Daughter series will soon launch on Netflix in Two installments, with Part 1 premiering on March 28, 2024, and Part 2 following later in the same year.
