From Adrian Lyne, the director of Fatal Attraction, Jacob’s Ladder, Unfaithful and many more acclaimed movies, here comes a new erotic psychological thriller “Deep Water“. Scheduled to release on Hulu on 18th March, 2022 the streaming platform dropped it’s official trailer today. The movie will also be available internationally on Amazon Prime Video.
Starring ex-rumoured-partners Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, Deep Water is centred around a married couple who have fallen out of love. Much like one of the most acclaimed Noir movies of the last decade Gone Girl (again that starred Ben Affleck), Deep Water revolves around the couple playing mind games with each other leading to people around them dying. The story is said to be twisted take on infidelity, obsession, lust and American sub-urban life.
The trailer opens to a very interesting quote that reads “The love story is never the whole story ” as Ana de Armas’ character asks Ben Affleck’s character if he still loves her or if he’s gotten bored of being with her. This conversation very much hints at the couple’s changing dynamics and possible efforts at keeping the flame within their relationship alive. There are flashing lights, hints at possible infidelity, seductions, burial of dead-bodies and what not following. The trailer also hints at inevitable brutal and gory scenes living up to it’s genre with the couple also at loggerheads in some scenes. The bluish-gray colour grading makes the trailer and anticipation for the movie all the more exciting. We are also shown glimpses of Jacob Elordi’s character in the trailer hinting at him playing a significant character, possibly a psychopath? Who knows. The trailer definitely hits all the right notes and lives up to it’s already built hype.
The film which is an adaptation of the 1957 novel of the same name by Patricia Highsmith marks Adrian Lyne’s return to films after his 2002 directorial “Faithful”. The screenplay is written by Zach Helm and Sam Levinson (Euphoria). Besides Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas, the film also stars Tracy Letts, Jacob Elordi, Rachel Blanchard and Lil Rel Howery in major roles.
Although the film was scheduled for a 2020 theatrical release, covid-19 pushed it’s release date further. It was then announced that Deep Water will be a Hulu release. Here we are, after two years waiting for Deep Water to finally hit our screens. We are definitely deprived of a good noir and we hope this one serves us well.
