If you like classic Bollywood horror thrillers, here is a list for you. If you read our previous recommendation, we wrote about ‘Madhumati’, ‘Woh Kaun Thi?’, ‘Neel Kamal’ and ‘Gumnaam’. In this article we will let you know about a few more underrated gems of the genre.
‘Mahal’ was the directorial debut of Kamal Arohi. It was produced by Ashok Kumar ar starred Ashok Kumar and Madhubala. Ashok Kumar plays Shankar who goes to a very old palace to live there. But he encounters a woman there who suddenly starts claiming that she is his lover. Mahal has great performances and wonderful music as well. It is more of a mystery than a horror movie and you should not miss it.
Bees Saal Baad (1962) – MX Player:
Directed by Biren Nag and produced by Hemant Kumar, ‘Bees Saal Baad’ stars Biswajit Chatterjee, Waheeda Rehman, Madanmohan, Madan Puri and many more talented actors. It tells the story of Vijay, who comes back to his old village after a long period of twenty years and all the villagers want him to stay alert and safe from a ghostly being. He gets to know that this is the ghost who has ended the lives of everybody in his family. Vijay decides to hire a private detective to investigate the matter and many mysteries unfold.
Kohra has the same leading cast as ‘Bees Saal Baad’. It stars Biswajit Chatterjee and Waheeda Rehman in lead roles and it is directed by the same director Biren Nag. The film was adapted from the Daphne Du Maurier’s novel ‘Rebecca’. It has some excerpts inspired from Hitchcock’s ‘Psycho’ too. Rajeshwari, the newly married wife of a rich man shifts to his house. And after the husband goes away for business issues, she has an encounter with a woman. Later she gets to know that it is the ghost of her husband’s ex-wife who is not alive now.
Watch these old horror thrillers from Bollywood if you like horror films. You can watch these films with your family and friends as there is nothing so called vulgar or sexual in these movies.
