Seven European nations have now announced that they have detected new cases of the Omicron variant novel coronavirus. A few countries are even contemplating complete and partial lockdowns. Now, the government of India is also on high alert as it is educating the state authorities about the Omicron variant Covid outbreak. The government of Maharashtra had already announced that only 50% crowd should be permitted at cinema halls across the state. It is heard that the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are also considering the idea of restricting the seating capacity at cinema halls. If that is the case, the scenario might present a new unexpected hurdle for India’s biggest action drama, RRR.
Just as the Indian theatrical market was showing signs of improvement, the Omicron scare has bestowed a shade of uncertainty. For a film of RRR, which is touted to be the costliest project in Indian cinema, 100% occupancy at cinema halls is of great importance. The film needs to register heavy footfalls at cinema halls if it is to recover the humongous investments. But with the state governments contemplating restrictions on seating capacity at cinema halls, things can go south rather quickly.
Well, RRR’s release is still around 40 days from now. Things can either go haywire or they might settle down in the period. So, it is too early to comment if the Omicron situation would actually affect RRR. We need to wait and see how things pan out in the near future. All we can do is hope the circumstances favor new releases.
Meanwhile, the RRR unit is planning a whirlwind promotional campaign as they look to build up the hype surrounding the film ahead of its worldwide theatrical release – 7th January.
