Time magazine has recently revealed a list of the 100 best movies which were released during the past ten decades (100 years) right from the 1920s era to the 2010s period. And guess what, there is only one Indian movie which has made it to the coveted international list. Can you guess the Indian film’s name?
It’s Satyajit Ray’s iconic directorial debut ‘Pather Panchali’ (Song of the Little Road) and it truly deserves to be on the Time magazine 100 Best Movies list. It was the first film of ‘The Apu Trilogy’ and was produced by the Government of West Bengal. After its release in 1956, The Times of India wrote that “It is absurd to compare it with any other Indian cinema… Pather Panchali is pure cinema.”
Not just that, when the Prime Minister of India Jawaharlal Nehru saw ‘Pather Panchali’ at a special screening, he was so impressed with the film that the movie was sent to the Cannes Film Festival after the PM’s personal approval. Such was the impact of the film. Moreover, ‘Pather Panchali’ has even got a brilliant critics’ score of 98% on reviews aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes – a rare feat for an Indian film.
Some recent post-2k movies which have been included in the Time magazine 100 best movies list are Quentin Tarantino’s ‘Once Upon a Time In Hollywood’, Guillermo del Toro’s fantasy film ‘Pan’s Labyrinth’, and Alfonso Cuaron’s dystopian drama ‘Children of Men’, to name a few.
Coming back to ‘Pather Panchali’, it was adapted from Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay’s 1929 Bengali novel of the same name. The movie’s basic plot follows the story of the titular character Apu and his poor family who live a hard life and are struggling to make ends meet in a village in Bengal. When Apu’s father leaves the village in search of a better job, his mother tries to take care of him and his elder sister Durga. You can stream Satyajit Ray’s must-watch movie ‘Pather Panchali’ on Amazon Prime Video and Hoichoi OTT platforms in India. You should not miss it if you still haven’t watched the film.
