Oppenheimer was prominent in ensuring they had a bomb at the box office, and with successful stats, they managed to gift IMAX a year to remember.
As of 2023, IMAX collected a whopping $1.06B, marking the second-highest income in its history. Compared to the ticket sales of 2022, it rose by 24.4%.
In 2019, during the peak of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, IMAX saw its zenith due to Avengers: Endgame grossing $2.9B worldwide.
This year, several factors favored IMAX, and Oppenheimer deserves a massive chunk of credit. Christopher Nolan, from the very beginning, emphasized the importance of watching on a 70MM IMAX experience.
Oppenheimer won $185M from the IMAX screens, and contributions from Barbie and Mario also played a significant role.
IMAX observed major expansions, growing from 1,529 locations in 2019 to 1,615 locations in 2023. Opening ventures in several Asian countries, IMAX aims to explore potentially profitable markets, especially in China, India, Japan, Indonesia, and Thailand.
The expansion isn’t limited to the number of screens but also extends to the number of films. Last year, 98 films had the opportunity to contribute to IMAX’s success, and this year, the number is likely to increase.
Though it has experienced a massive expansion in the number of screens, for filmmakers, it becomes a question of cost as well. People can bet their money on a film like Oppenheimer, but for other titles, they will definitely be skeptical as the ticket pricing won’t go easy on them.
Besides that, the filmmaking cost for an IMAX exclusive or IMAX-worthy film is definitely not worthwhile for all films, and that too is a significant factor.
