Ava DuVernay became the first African-American woman to present her film in the prestigious Venice International Film Festival with the screening of ‘Origin’. At the same time, ‘Origin’ is the first Hollywood production to tell the story of B. R Ambedkar.
The movie was also screened at the Toronto International Film Festival and received a standing ovation there. ‘Origin’ tells the stories of inequalities all over the world and stars actors like Connie Nielsen, Jon Bernthal, Vera Farmiga, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and Victoria Pedretti. High critical acclaim in one after another film festival is beaming up anticipation for the movie.
The movie is adapted from the ‘Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents’ by Isabel Wilkerson. It will explore the theme of discrimination through the lenses of American racism, India’s caste based system and the discrimination against jews by Nazis.
Gaurav J. Pathania has played the role of B. R Ambedkar and his performance has been appreciated by critics. Origin has been selected for the Golden Lion Awards. It is of course a high honour and the director is overjoyed. Ava DuVernay says, “There are stories that are profound and that are deeply felt and emotional in every country in this world that deal with justice. Let me tell you, that’s why when I would see some of the numbers that I got shared with me from When They See Us from all these countries and territories — it’s astounding that story of these boys, which you would think wouldn’t travel, how it traveled everywhere.”
