Just a few hours back, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have announced the shortlists in ten categories for the 2023 edition of the Oscar Awards.
And the good news for fans of Indian cinema is that Pan Nalin’s ‘Last Film Show’ has been shortlisted in the ‘Best International Feature Film’ category. The competition is quite tough in this category as other contenders include Germany’s war film ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, Mexico’s ‘Bardo’, South Korean film ‘Decision to Leave’, amongst others. It remains to be seen which films make it to the final Oscar 2023 nominations list.
Moreover, the widely admired Naatu Naatu song from S.S. Rajamouli’s period action extravaganza ‘RRR’ has been shortlisted in the ‘Best Original Song’ category.
Two more Indian films namely Shaunak Sen’s ‘All That Breathes’ and the Netflix short ‘The Elephant Whisperers’ have also made their way to the Oscars 2023 shortlists in the ‘Best Documentary Feature Film’ and the ‘Documentary Short Film’ categories. However, in the first category, two fine films namely ‘Sr.’ and ‘Good Night Oppy’ were not able to make it (perhaps the biggest exclusions).
The two leaders of today’s Oscars 2023 shortlists are ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ and the Marvel superhero flick ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ with five categories each. And next in line is James Cameron’s visually opulent film ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’, which has been shortlisted in four categories.
The final list of Oscar nominated films will be announced on 24th January and the Oscars 2023 Awards ceremony will take place on 12th March in Hollywood. Here is the list of Oscars 2023 shortlists for the ten categories.
